APPA awards

The last week was a very exciting one for me.  This was the first time I was entering prints in the annual AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards and it was quite an experience. The judging took place at the  PMA Australia show  in the Melbourne Exhibition and Conference Center.  Aka Jeff’s shed. There were three rooms where photographers work was being judged simultaneously, each by a panel of five well respected professional photographers. Waiting for your print to come up is a  pretty nerve racking experience, and when it did I was holding my breath as the judges poured over it in detail and debated the merits. I was absolutely delighted when they awarded it a silver with distinction, especially as the wedding photo-journalistic category is very competitive.

Thanks to image science for a lovely print and abacus art for the wonderful mounting.

It was also great to see Peter Coulson scoop Australian Photographer of the year, his work in fashion photography is amazing and his willingness to share his knowledge at the various AIPP seminars is very commendable.

Windy Melbourne Weddings

After a lovely ceremony at the Melbourne registry office, Pip and Dan went for some food, fresh air and photography at Melbourne’s beach institution, St Kilda.  More photography from their wedding  can be found under their wedding section.

Photographer show and tell

This week I attended a really informative workshop organised by the aipp at Fed Square. We had Yervant discussing wedding photography approaches, Glenn Hester demonstrating the attention to detail needed for architectural photography and Peter Coulson the fashion photographer, who was willing to share some of the top photography tips he uses to create amazing images of stunning models. With so many people in attendance, it was really more watching and learning than shooting, though I did manage to grab a few shots – in this one we were creating motion blur effects in camera (no Photoshop, honest!)

wedding-flowers

I had the pleasure of being the photographer for amber and vincent’s wedding on Jan 29th.

We started the day at the Brides home with some getting ready shots. The ceremony took place at the Melbourne registry office, and afterward we went back to St Kilda for some photographs on the beach

One thing I noticed was the way Amber  paid special attention to her bouquet throughout the day, which is what I’m trying to capture in these photographs. More photographs can be found under the wedding photography section.

Albert park, Melbourne – Cat and Michael

Although Cat and Michael had already officially tied the know before this, it didn’t stop them getting into the spirit of the Melbourne leg of their wedding trilogy.
After some windy pictures at St Kilda Pier, and some nice photos in Catani gardens, it was off to Albert Park, Melbourne for the reception. We traveled in style in a wedding limousine and the whole wedding party were fantastic fun. On the way we shot a few bride and groom shots, including this one at Albert Park lake, with the Melbourne skyline acting as a backdrop.
